In the past the parents have the "authority" to run your life. They are the ones who says what you wear, what you need to do and what you will become. People in the past had little things to worry about than in the present. They just do what they are told and live with it. Well not everyone but the majority of them.
In the Philippines, we are called the "uhm/ahm" (I don't know the correct spelling of the word) generation, from late 80's til the 90's. The uhm/ahm is the water from rice when you cooked the rice. They said that instead of milk the uhm/ahm was given to us, hence the uhm/ahm generation.
But I have my version of why we are the uhm/ahm generation. When I was a kid my mom or my aunt would pick my wardrobe for me, would tell me what to do, etc. but the times were changing. In my high school years they let me decide about things. It was a good change I guess but the fact is, I was used to them telling what to do that I am unable to decide by myself. Therefore, the "uuhhhmmm" generation (to those who didn't get it "uhhhmmm" is what we say when we are still thinking or is undecided) is my version. I am not speaking generally of course, not all that were born in my time have difficulty in deciding on something.
Back to the article, why the new generation can't afford to marry at an early age and have a family of their own. We could easily have blamed it on the economy, but how about commitment? Can we still blame the econ about it? Well for me its about culture, it is changing. We have been bombarded by so many movies and books about finding The One. So I guess that we are constantly looking for The One who is perfect for us, that if we find a little tiny fault in the person we're with we give up and find another one. We take our time because the culture permits it or the society is accepting these changes and we have things that makes it convenient like speed dating, contraceptives and we have technologies to use. In the past if you're not married by 28 (for women) they're considered as spinsters already and if you got pregnant you are automatically engaged to be married. But now it is widely acceptable to have kids even though you are single.
Maybe that's why today's generation is so resistant on commitment. They get tangled up on hurts, failures, disappointments and to top it all with responsibility. Its so convenient now a days, the easy way we can get rid of those things that are unconventional with our vast arrays of technology and the new discoveries in science.
